Blue Ginger offers a great introduction to the complex, spicy delights of Nyonya-style Malaysian cuisine, an intriguing fusion of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Thai techniques and ingredients. The soups and noodles are savory and soulful, the stir-fries zippy and exotic. Be sure to try the deep, dark beef rendang stew when it’s offered. No alcohol; BYOB, no corkage fee.

If you are not Asian, the proprietors and servers at Blue Ginger Garden will greet you warmly, even sweetly — but they may be a little surprised to see you. Blue Ginger serves authentic Nyonya-style Malaysian food, which isn’t exactly as familiar in these parts as, say, kung pao chicken from Pei Wei. Too bad: It’s a fascinating, vivid cuisine, one I fell in love with after gorging on it in Singapore and hunting it down in the back streets of New York’s Chinatown. (Full review)
