Westerns are the comfort food of American movies, our national mythology writ large for the screen and stocked with iconographic characters. The outlaw, the sheriff, the country doctor, various tribes of American Indians, the outcast prostitute: We know them all through decades of repetition and occasional variation. Cowboys and Aliens , the loud new action genre mash-up directed by Jon Favreau , manages to flatten these frequently warring icons into a team with a common enemy. It’s 1873, and aliens are invading Arizona Territory. They’d better have their papers ready.
