Hired secretly by a government official hoping to end Matsudaira's reign of terror, Shimada recruits the best samurai in Japan and then sets a trap for the lord's large contingent of faithful bodyguards.

One can pinpoint the exact moment when 13 Assassins transforms from vivid samurai drama to insane work of genius. A small band of samurai has lured an evil lord and his vast contingent into a jerry-rigged ambush. The samurai have arrows. They have swords. They have … flaming rhinoceroses? They look like rhinos, anyway. Whatever they are they’re angry and on fire, and as they charge into the bad guys you realize you’re watching a film that makes up its own rules.
