While touring Tuscany, Italy, promoting his new book, English author James (William Shimell) meets French store owner Elle (Juliette Binoche), and the two hit it off, deciding to spend a free day together. They travel to a nearby town, get coffee, visit a museum and pretend to be recently married in what turns out to be a popular wedding destination. As these two strangers get to know each other, however, it becomes clear there's more to their new relationship than meets the eye.

Even an austere art film needs visceral appeal, and the gut-level kick of Certified Copy is that it’s very like going on a virtual date with Juliette Binoche — or her co-star William Shimell. In this way, despite its philosophical ruminations on reality and artifice, Certified Copy is a kind of middle-aged answer to the Before Sunrise and Before Sunset movies, with two attractive people walking around a beautiful European location, in this case Tuscany, talking nonstop and getting to know each other.
