Dakota's Steakhouse

600 N. Akard St., Dallas, TX, 75201
(214) 740-4001 - Venue Website

What's better than a fine, aged wine? How about a fine, aged steakhouse that serves prime, dry aged steaks. Where would one find such a unique combination?

Dakota's was established in 1984 and has been a downtown Dallas dining icon for over 25 years. Dakota's unique underground location has an interesting story behind it. It is located one level below street level on a section of real estate that was once occupied by the First Dallas Baptist church. There is a legally binding clause in the deed that prohibits any future owner from selling alcohol on former church grounds. Because "on the grounds" and "below ground" are two different terms, and because Lincoln Property Company wanted a restaurant to anchor their international headquarters, land was excavated and the restaurant was placed 18 feet below street grade.

The restaurant is decorated with a hand-cut Italian Carrera marble floor in a basket weave pattern, dark wood paneling, brown leather, marble trim and New Orleans style brass gas lamps. There are authentic art deco lamps and mirrors located in the back of the restaurant and stately classical wood columns - salvaged from an early 20th century beaux-arts Dallas home - topped with Corinthian capitals that rise above the bow-shaped bar topped with green marble. The large French doors allow sunlight to stream through giving the dining room warmth and light.

Customers ride down to Dakota's in a canopied glass elevator accessed from street level while viewing the 1,800 square-foot outdoor subterranean courtyard. This cool oasis is complete with a 5-tiered granite water wall, multi-tiered landscaping, lava rock fire fit and black granite bar. Dakota's patio has long been considered one of the city's most romantic dining spots.

So why “Dakota’s?” The name was chosen in homage to the eight million pounds of Dakota mahogany granite that was used throughout the restaurant and Lincoln Plaza.

Located below the sidewalks of downtown Dallas at the 20 year Dallas icon, Dakota's Steakhouse.

Sit back and take in the many decorative nuances that make Dakota's still one of the most romantic spots in Dallas. Outside the restaurant, the multi-level waterfall, the draping foliage and the black granite patio bar make dining outdoors a delight. Inside the restaurant, the New Orleans lamps and imported marble floors neatly package the classic theme. Chef Ted Grieb has added his personal touches to such dishes as the 16-ounce Bone Filet, Colorado Lamb Chops, Berkshire Pork Chop and the many seafood options. For dessert Dakota's offers numerous options for the most discriminating tastes.

The glamorous, windowed elevator shaft that carries guests to the restaurant's subterranean location provides a glimpse of the patio framed by a waterfall. It's one of the most romantic, clandestine settings in the city. (Full review)

Excellent Food and Service

I've been to Dakota's 3+ times and it's always been outstanding. The setting is beautiful and the service is fantastic. The steaks are incredible in terms of quality, preparation, taste, etc. During the week it's a great place to take a client for dinner or drinks.
