The Iranian barber cutting my son’s hair tipped me off: The place for good Persian food is a little spot called Zafaron Grill. Giovanni’s used to be the place, said the barber, but the chef left, and she’s now running Zafaron, in a Far North Dallas strip mall.
The barber had it right: Mehrnosh Fathalizadeh, who cooked at Giovanni’s for seven years, bought Zafaron Grill about four months ago, and there she’s turning out some of the best kebabs in town, along with zereshk polo, kashk-o-bademjan and other Persian specialties. Zereshk polo, if you’re new to the pleasures of Persian cooking, is rice pilaf cooked with barberries (zereshk) —tangy little red fruits; kashk-o-bademjan is an eggplant dip. (Full review)
