Avner Samuel and Jon Stevens head the kitchen at the vibrant "Euro bistro" that Samuel runs with his wife, Celeste. Start with a few "noshes," such as hot, puffy escargot fritters and littleneck clams "chowder style," then move on to well-turned-out bigger plates. The pan-roasted chicken, cauliflower-leek mash and tarte Tatin are standouts. Full bar. Smoking outside.

Nosh, the northerly sequel to Avner and Celeste Samuel’s 18-month-old Oak Lawn “Euro bistro,” has some wicked good fry cooks. (Full review)
Pastry chef Steve Noe does a terrific job with traditional French desserts at Nosh, the “Euro bistro” Avner Samuel opened last fall in his former Aurora space. I love Noe’s thickly apply, buttery tarte Tatin, a symphony of bright fruit, warm caramel and tender crust — with a scoop of house-made vanilla on top, bien sûr. There’s nothing fussy or formal about it, or any of Noe’s desserts; they have a kind of rustic elegance. As in his hazelnut financier, which has an almost brownielike texture. Chocoholics will swoon over Nosh’s super-rich, beautifully thick chocolate pot de crème. (Full review)
Many a Dallasite mourns the loss of Aurora, but I'm a much bigger fan of the casual, stylish French-accented bistro Avner Samuel opened in its place. The cooking (thanks to Samuel and executive chef Jon Stevens) has flair and a sense of adventure, from the hot, light escargot fritters or the deconstructed clam chowder to a sumptuous pan-roasted chicken.
