Small, popular, family-owned chain of smart, individually styled restaurants serving Tex-Mex, Mexican, “Salvatex” and Salvadoran cuisine. The 1986 original moved in 2011 to a repurposed firehouse. Top-notch service and patio, with excellent Salvadoran pupusas and caramelized plantains, but inconsistency in other dishes, such as brisket tacos and Salvadoran tamales. Full bar, with good tequila selection. See website for other locations.

Moving the original Gloria’s Restaurant in Oak Cliff down Davis Street to the repurposed Firehouse No. 15 is as much a symbolic journey as a literal one. Some 25 years ago, Gloria and Jose Fuentes started the original, a wonderfully funky Salvadoran outpost, where English speakers sometimes struggled with a language barrier and Tex-Mex was an afterthought. The food was fresh, inexpensive — and wonderful.
Today, Gloria’s is a small chain of 14 smart, individually styled restaurants embracing a smorgasbord of cuisines on one menu: Tex-Mex, traditional Mexican, “Salvatex” and Salvadoran. (Full review)
