To the best of our knowledge, Sharaku is Dallas’ first izakaya, a Japanese tavern featuring tapas-like small plates. This one, owned by chef Yutaka Yamato, who also has Yutaka Sushi Bistro two doors over, specializes in kushiyaki, skewered morsels grilled over Japanese charcoal, and kushiage, skewered tidbits that are panko-crusted and deep-fried. Those, plus hot and cold small plates, are all wonderful. There’s shabu-shabu too, and an impressive list of sakes. Wine, beer and sake.

Yutaka Yamato opened this charming lounge in 2009 in the same Uptown strip mall as his popular Yutaka Sushi Bistro, turning it into an izakaya the following year. There’s an impressive selection of sakes; choose one for sipping as you nibble snacks like chamame (tea-infused edamame), “Moro-Q” (cucumber spears with moromi miso paste dip) or watarigani (tiny tempuraed crabs). The main event is kushiyaki skewers of Kurobuta pork, meatballs, bacon-wrapped scallops and more, grilled over charcoal. Diners waiting for a seat at Yutaka stop by for a drink, but you can definitely make an evening of it. (Full review)
A wizened cook gently fans the embers on a Japanese charcoal grill behind a rustic bar, hitting a paper fan rhythmically against his wrist for just the right wind level. So much attention for the couple of skewers he's grilling! It seems it'll take forever to serve everyone, even though there are only 10 or 12 people in the small lounge. But somehow it doesn't, and the "classic" Kurobuta pork kushiyaki skewers that soon appear before us are fabulous – gorgeously grilled and tender, with a deep, smoky, porky flavor. (Full review)
