Markets down. Unemployment up. Equity gone bye-bye.

This is a touchy time to open a luxuriously appointed nightclub that caters to conspicuously consuming Dallasites and fly-through celebrities. But that's what PM Nightlife Lounge at the Joule hotel is about - and it's about it very, very well. This is one of the most ambitious, and at first blush most fully realized, debuts in a decade.

PM is a small gem, at 1,500 square feet, but exquisitely set by all-purpose lifestyle purveyor Todd Fiscus. He and his collaborators have combined wit and big dollars with a cool charm that's uncharacteristic of strained-expectations Dallas. The folks at PM won't cough up numbers, but one designer pal with an accountant's eye suspects a high-six-figures budget.

Whatever the money amount, it was well-spent, evident to all who step past the glass door and down the broad stairway, which creates a sense of moment in itself, to the rectangular room below. Installations of pyrite and crystal sparkle at each turn. Huge mirrors reflect kindly on guests, because the creamy lighting here flatters everyone, which is a neat trick

Slyly segregated spaces - front bar, left- and right-side seating arrangements, back bar concealed behind a beaded curtain - promote both intimacy and sociability, another neat trick.

The fixtures and furnishings, by Mr. Fiscus' own description, exist in some nether dimension between Opium Wars-era Chinese brothel and the remainders from a David Lynch soundstage. (Cue the dancing dwarf.)

General manager Chad Boyle, familiar from Hotel ZaZa and Steel, applies his enthusiasm for wine in PM's bar menu and bottle service selections.

He and reservations coordinator Sarah Thornhill are dedicated to a hard door that stays that way. Those are brave words in a tough economy and on a Main Street clogged with Ed Hardy T-shirts during the weekends and would be the neatest trick of all.

Its glamour guru, Todd Fiscus, has moved on, but the subterranean speak-easy at the Joule hotel remains the best-looking place in the city to have a drink – a small gem, at 1,500 square feet, set in deep reds and dark woods with a dab of kitsch and a touch of kink. (Full review)

Utter Failure...

I went to PM Lounge this past Sat Ngt and had a bottle service table. Everything that could have gone wrong, did.

First, the VIP Manager did not even put our names on the guest list even though the night before we confirmed it and accordingly they had turned away 8 of our guests!

Second, they had agreed through texting the day before, that we would get a table at a special discounted price of $250 per bottle and two bottle minimum. When we got there, they jacked the price to $350 a bottle with two bottle minimum.

Third, they had a very very bad attitude of like take it or leave it. Then they told us that we can get 10 people under our party in, and then gave us a table that you could barely sit 5.

Fourth, I saw my cocktail waitress only twice throughout the whole night. Once to say hello and start the bottle service and next to pay the bill. Me and my guest had to pour out own drinks at the table the whole night, which is worst thing that you can do at bottle service joint anyware in the US. Basically there was NO Service.

Then to add insult to injury, they added an automtic 20% tip even though they didnt give us any service at all. Last the sound system was very loud and acutally kept getting stopped and they played rap the whole night pretty much.

Add all this to a very very bad attitude of a blonde girl who was the VIP Manager and they completely failed from every angle. I will never go back to this place and anyone who goes, I wish them lots of luck if they want to get a bottle service table. More than likely they will waste their money and be very disappointed with the service and the overall attitude of the management.
