Dallas' Fickle 500 of early adopters are swooning over this stolid rectangular space that's been tricked up with chandeliers, noise-absorbing draperies and crushed velvet furniture geared to bottle service. A solid DJ program keeps booties bumping on the cramped dance floor. The rustically finished out second-floor terrace specializes in bubbly by the bottle.
Club operators, with their generous egos and worldly mien, seldom get caught looking chagrined. John Reardon did Saturday night, on the opening weekend for his Joyce Champagne Lounge and Nightclub downtown.
Wish Ultralounge's Sam Sameni breezed through with a gaggle of scantily clad, hand-painted provocateurs promoting Wish's "anti-censorship" party that night. They were there and gone in a blink of guerrilla theater. Mr. Reardon shrugged sheepishly, just the tiniest pebble on the rocky 16-month-long road to make Joyce a reality.
At first blush, the place appears worth the trip, making the best of a stolid rectangular space. A long, white marble bar at the front and a secondary bar in one corner provide the liquid amusement. The DJ booth overlooks an arrangement of crushed velvet furniture geared to bottle service. (Crowd flow gets sticky in the narrow pathway between one wall and that VIP enclave.) A designer friend credited the high, tufted banquette walls and drapes for superior noise control.
More Joyce is coming, specifically the "champagne lounge" portion. Mr. Reardon expects to finish out a second-floor space in September that will specialize in bubbly by the bottle.
The club opens at 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. No cover, but there is door control. - Mr. Dallas

From QuickDFW.com (08/2008):

A nightclub named Joyce doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Try it: "Bye y'all, I'm off to Joyce!" But the 2-week-old spot is already drawing some of Dallas' finest talent, and by that I mean girls with skinny bronze legs and guys with boulder-like shoulders. The club sits on Pearl Street, away from the car-clogged Main Street craziness. Ladies, if you want to get in, wear your Hervé Léger-inspired minidress or something that shows off your body. Guys, be their arm candy or buy a table. The average bottle is $350, with a two-bottle minimum most nights. There was already a line at 11 p.m. last Saturday, and we stepped in behind a group of three men and a woman. (This is a bad combo if you don't know someone important – more women is key.) The bouncer wasn't having it. "Sorry," he told them, "but this is how it is on Saturday nights." Three leggy, tanned girls showed up. Click. The velvet rope became unlatched. Inside, Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" bumped, segueing into thumping electro with a disco beat. A few women danced. One couple did a groin-to-groin lambada. Owner John Reardon says he wants Joyce to feel like a private residence, but the place feels more like a club. Bottle-service tables sit in one open room, rather than enclaves or salons. Chandeliers are a trendy touch. The coolest part of the club is the entryway, a skinny white corridor silhouetted with Joyce logos. Girls can also dance on the furniture here, which was made specifically to withstand the pokes of stiletto heels. Alas, having worn wedges – and ... uh ... not being able to afford a table – I didn't get to try.

What to wear: Ladies – minidress that shows off your bod, sky-high heels. Men – graphic-print tee or white button-down with the sleeves rolled up, jeans.

What the music is like: Hip-hop, mash-ups, electro.

Drink of choice: A split of Moet, which is a glass of champagne plus a little extra, will set you back $14.

Seen/heard: We saw one girl snag her bracelet on another girl's dress, then work patiently in the dim light to untangle herself. The bracelet girl apologized, but the second girl just glared at her and moved on.

Smoking: Yes

Cover: None. Although if you're a guy, you may want to bring cash for the door man.

Bottom line: New, hot, expensive, hard-door, so dress up and get there early.
