Two things that let you know summer is upon us: 100-plus-degree temperatures, and the arrival of the Vans Warped Tour, the all-day smorgasbord of punk, hardcore and other styles of rock. Now in its 15th incarnation and trailing a cloud of compilation albums, commercial tie-ins and controversy, the Warped tour is arguably one of the most successful rock ’n’ roll roadshows in history. It’s also developed a fairly reliable formula: a headliner with street cred (in this case, California’s Bad Religion), hot young acts (Sing It Loud, which released its debut album Come Around last year), ska (Westbound Train) and the visually arresting (the self-described “femme fatale punk rock” of Civet). Some have pointed to this reliability as a sign of selling out, while others staunchly defend the festival. Slap on some sunscreen and see for yourself.
