 07/18/2008 - GuideLive.com - Bill Addison/Restaurant Critic

It is the rare restaurant, in Dallas or any city, that achieves enduring popularity and critical praise but decides to pause at the crest of its success to regroup and make itself even better. But Abacus, which has maintained a five-star rating from The Dallas Morning News since 2002, just recalibrated itself brilliantly. (Full review)

Superb

After a bad experience at the mansion at turtle creek, we left and went to Abacus. Abacus excelled with their service, food, atmosphere, and hospitality to create a memorable experience. It is our favorite restaurant in the metroplex.

the critic should look again

If Abacus ever was a 5-star restaurant, it certainly isn't one these days. The service is unpolished, unwelcoming to those not recognized, and has no sense of pacing (agonizingly slow most recently and rushed on the visit before that). Their wine is very expensive, and the bottle recommended was not particularly enjoyable.

The tasting menu should be available on the weekends. But availability issues aside, they routinely short you a course. They promise 9 but they apparently count the sorbet as a course, which is nonsense. Also, the foie gras was nickel-sized (1/4 the size on tasting menus elsewhere), and they cut corners on the cheese plate too, providing one plate with far too little for 6 diners.

Also, the food at the other 5-star places in town (have tried all but one on several occasions) is on a different (higher) level. In short, there are far better places to go for the money at present.

Fantastic!

No matter what I order at Abacus, I am always delighted. They have a perfect approach from food to ambiance. Highly Recommended!
