Urbano Cafe has opened in East Dallas, next to Jimmy's Food Store. Owners Kristen and Mitch Kauffman are offering a menu similar to the one at their last venture, Urbano Paninoteca (which closed last year), with the addition of non-panino sandwiches served on crusty ciabatta, such as pulled pork with hoisin mayo and grilled steak with Gorgonzola and arugula. Panini, salads and pastas are on the menu too. The cafe has begun lunch service, with dinners planned and dinners were expected to start June 11. B.Y.O.B.

It's not the food and it's not the waitstaff (minus the filthy insect problem).
Having happily eaten at Urbano several times before, we made reservations 2 weeks out.
There was no table for our party of 2, althogh there was an empty table for 6. We were asked to wait outside on the sidewalk(no chairs, benches, etc.) and assured that we'd be seated soon since one of the tables was currently settling the check. (Yeah baby.)
The party for 6, with reservations at the same time as ours, arrived 15 minutes late, unexpectedly minus 2 of their number. So the nasty-tempered owner removed a smaller table that had expanded a 4-top to a 6-top to fit them, and set it outside the front door at our feet. (Was that a message?)
When we were finally seated ... our expereince devolved from rude to horrific.
We ordered hors d'oeuvres and salads, which were promptly delivered and thoroughly delicious.
But, hey, guys, we also ordered main courses. An hour and a half later, we were still waiting. The waitstaff got embarrassed and brought us a freebie fish course, but not our entrees - with no explanation or apology as to why our entrees never appeared.
Then the 2-inch cockroach showed up on our table. Guess he was hungry, too. When we flagged down the waiter, he grabbed the roach, by then on a chair, and tossed it under the table.
Gee, no more appetite. We asked for the check and left, having invested an hour and a half for no dinner.
Urbano gets an Oscar for worst dining experience of my life.
We were told we could eat but that the next party would come in one hour. Could we do it? Of course, typically that's no problem. We ordered right away, then the food didn't come and didn't come. Then the next party came early and they sat over us like vultures watching us eat. The waitress and hostess weren't very nice and we were seriously whisked away after 50min with food still in our mouths.
To boot, the restaurant is small with minimal decor and not even fresh painting on the walls. The appetizer of "mini" crab cakes was not tasty (although the main dishes that we were still eating on the way out were quite good).
It was cold, loud, the waitress was not a waitress (so she said) and I would not ever go back to this restaurant. I can not imagine why it got such good reviews in the newspaper. Are the owners someone's friends (nephew?) or was someone paid?
This small but exciting restaurant has amazing food. Mitch came over and talked to us the first time we were there. The second time he remembered us. We have taken several friends there and they all loved it and have been back. What a great neighborhood spot.
Saturday night, table for 4 ordered 3 appetizers, 4 salads, 4 main dishes and 1 dessert. Mussels were amazing, rest of the meal was above average to average but we felt rushed from the moment we sat down. When telling the waitress that we wanted to order our main dish after eating our appetizer, she actually rolled her eyes and went to tell Mitch (owner) who stared at us as we tried to enjoy our food. Just as we paid the bill and were preparing to leave, Mitch actually came over and said to us that we needed to leave because we had SATYED TOO LONG. I'm serious! We were eating the entire time from 7:00 - 9:30pm. We were really told to LEAVE. It was so loud in this tiny place that we shouted to each other through the entire dinner. We did need to LEAVE to give our vocal chords a break. Truly, we would forgive anything at this quirky restaurant except RUDENESS. Great Prices for good food and can't beat the BYOB...but what a price to pay!
With a party of seven you expect someone in the group will not be satisfied with their choice of meal. That was not the case on our first visit to Urbano. Meals included the lobster risotto, the tagliatelle/catch of the day, and the pork loin with gouda grits. All were all well cooked, seasoned, and presented. I'm not sure what the true issue was with the other user reviewer, but we were a party of 7 and had no issue getting a table. A minor downside was that they ran out of glasses and ice, but after a quick run to the convenience store and a brief wait for the dishwasher to finish, all was resolved.
I cannot review the food at this restaurant because the horribly rude and pretentious, stick up his you-know-what, self-important owner, Mitch, would not accomodate a party of more than 6 people. We asked to be seated at different tables, even, two tables of 4 and he wanted nothing to do with it. We asked to come very early, at 6pm, he was completely unaccomodating. If you want to go give your hard earned money to a pathetic attempt at a restaurant that is rude to completely nice people over the phone, this is your place.

Charming, cute, stuffy, noisy, friendly, quirky and definitely original: That's Urbano, the tiny cafe tucked in a storefront between Jimmy's Food Store and Tom Spicer's produce shop F.M. 1410. It's BYOB, a real boon with Jimmy's just steps away. (Full review)
Hey, let's open a restaurant – we can do it right here on the block! Judy'll make the costumes, and hey, Mickey, you can cook! That's the feeling at Urbano Cafe, the modest place that Kristen and Mitch Kauffman opened in early June after shuttering their popular Uptown spot, Urbano Paninoteca. (Full review)
