Mimi Kato sees art as “one-person theater.” She’s the actor, performing the roles of each character; the choreographer, orchestrating the movements and poses of the characters; the costume designer, hand-sewing the outfits; and above all, she says, the director, orchestrating the pieces of her production within the two-dimensional space of color prints.
Kato’s new show at Conduit Gallery, “Four Seasons,” which consists of four large, very theatrical photographs, illustrates all of that and more. She completed these works during her residency at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program in Roswell, N.M. A native of Japan, Kato has lived in the U.S. since 1998.
