Exhibition at Dallas Museum of Art showcases the works of the New York artist and furniture maker, who was devoted to personal expression and called his work "artistic furniture." The show, featuring more than 40 pieces of furniture and related objects by an artist whose "forms and imaginative carving combined many different influences, from the abstract naturalism of art nouveau styling to boldly direct forms characteristic of the Arts and Crafts movement," opens Sept. 20 and will be on view through Jan. 3.

CRITICS REVIEWS

Charles Rohlfs was an actor, a bad one from the extant reviews. And he was a business consultant, unremarkable one assumes, as there are no accounts of that period in his life. In between those jobs, there was a 10-year period, 1897-1907, when he created highly individualistic handmade furniture. (Full review)
