Spotlight: Opening act Converge isn’t for the faint of ears. The Salem, Mass.-formed band, now based in both Salem and Brooklyn, N.Y., mixes punk aesthetics with a heart-pounding, rapid-fire style of heavy metal. The four members — Jacob Bannon, Kurt Ballou, Nate Newton and Ben Koller — give new meaning to the words "frenetic power" on the new Axe to Fall, Converge’s seventh studio album.
After a career that began in 1990, the Converge members have just recently started seeing the gradual rise of their mainstream appeal. Only the group’s last three studio discs, 2004’s You Fail Me, 2006’s No Heroes and Axe to Fall, which was released Oct. 20, have charted on Billboard’s pop albums list.
Axe to Fall has already garnered Converge critical comparisons to seminal hard-core punk band Black Flag. Surely the band’s current shows on the Metalocalypse tour with Dethklok, Mastodon and High on Fire, couldn’t hurt its standing.
The Adult Swim Presents Dethklok and Mastodon Tour:
The Grammy® Award-winning Mastodon hits the road with Dethklok, the world's most brutal animated death metal band from Adult Swim's "Metalocalypse." Oakland's High On Fire and Converge will open each show.
As sponsor for the entire tour, Adult Swim will feature "Brütal Legend" gaming stations for fans to experience the videogame voiced by Tenacious D's Jack Black first-hand, while a two-minute animated content piece, created by Titmouse, will air during each show.
Nathan Explosion, William Murderface, Skwisgaar Swigelf, Toki Wartooth and Pickles - better known as Dethklok - will take to the road in support of the band's latest CD, Dethklok: The Dethalbum II. Bringing the animated band to life on stage each night will be series co-creator and composer Brendon Small along with a band including Gene Hoglan, Bryan Beller and Mike Keneally. These real-life musicians will perform live while dark-lit and playing underneath a projection screen featuring all-new animation and music videos from Dethklok.
