Don Schol is a Vietnam veteran with a truly unique life experience. Soon after receiving his master of fine arts from the University of Texas in 1966, Schol became an officer in the infantry. He was sent to Vietnam but was told that he would be leading a rather different kind of mission, as a combat artist whose team would be charged with using its talent to document the war for history. The complete archive remains in a military-history war-art collection in Washington, D.C., but other works by Schol are on view at Photographs Do Not Bend. Although photography is among the subjects that Schol has taught at the University of North Texas, where he’s still on the faculty, this is not a photographic exhibit. Rather, it is a collection of woodblock prints that chronicle his time in Southeast Asia. Schol will speak about his work during a gallery talk on Saturday June 13.
