Matthew Posey has certainly kept the promise he made to his fans when he opened his Exposition Park performance space, Ochre House — which doubles as his living quarters — last November. He said he’d be presenting a full season right away, and he’s done just that.
The latest offering, 14 Death Defying Acts, is the fourth show his own production company has mounted at the site. Ochre House has also hosted Audacity Theatre Lab in a world premiere as well as some flamenco dancing. It’s been a busy schedule for a place that’s been open for only seven months.
The new show, subtitled An Autopsy on Hunter S. Thompson, is a world premiere dealing with the notorious gonzo journalist and novelist who chronicled America’s counterculture in stories for Rolling Stone magazine and in his fiction. In the play, Thompson has barricaded himself in a hotel room, high on liquor, pills and mescaline. He takes a mental journey back to his past and to Los Angeles, before it drops off the end of the Earth.
Posey himself will play Thompson, inspired casting for those who have witnessed the writer-actor’s hilarious performances either as boss of Deep Ellum Theatre Garage in the 1980s or, more recently, in guest appearances at Undermain Theatre.

The only sexual component in 14 Death Defying Acts is the resentment of an ex-wife. But there are a lot of drugs and rock 'n' roll. Matthew Posey subtitles his new piece "An Autopsy of Hunter S. Thompson," and that gives a pretty good sense of what the show is about. (Full review)
