Guys and Dolls in Concert

It’s old home week when WaterTower Theatre and the Dallas Wind Symphony team up for a concert version of "Guys and Dolls" this weekend. Dara Whitehead-Allen and Brian Gonzales were two of the busiest and most beloved musical-theater performers in Dallas before they departed the city a few years back. Now she returns from Austin and he from New York — both temporarily, alas — to play Sarah Brown and Nathan Detroit, respectively. She’ll be opposite Shane Peterman as Sky Masterson. His Miss Adelaide will be Cara Statham Serber.
Of course, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling’s adaptation of Damon Runyon’s tales about gamblers and church workers in Times Square remains one of the best books ever written for a musical, and Frank Loesser’s songs retain all their charm and punch.
This golden age show comes from the time when musical comedies were meant to be fun, and these performers should know how to make that happen.
